Who We Work With

The Assessment Process

Adult dyslexia assessments are designed to provide a clear understanding of how literacy and processing differences may affect your work, study, or daily life. The process typically includes:

1. Pre-Assessment Questionnaires

Before the assessment, you will complete questionnaires covering your education history, learning experiences, current work or study environment, and everyday challenges. This helps the assessor build a clear understanding of your background before the assessment takes place.

2. Diagnostic Assessment Session

You will attend an assessment session with one of our Specialist Teachers in Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD). During the session, the assessor will use recognised assessment tools and structured activities to explore areas such as:

  • Reading accuracy and comprehension
  • Spelling and written language skills
  • Phonological awareness (how the brain processes sounds in words)
  • Memory and processing speed
  • Your wider learning profile and problem-solving abilities

The session is designed to be supportive and respectful, ensuring you feel comfortable throughout the assessment.

3. Report and Clinical Review

Following the assessment, the assessor will analyse the results alongside the background information provided. You will receive a comprehensive written report outlining the findings, whether the results are consistent with dyslexia, and practical recommendations for support in work, study, or everyday life.

4. Feedback Session

Once the report is complete, you will be offered a feedback session with the assessor to discuss the findings, answer any questions, and talk through the recommended next steps and possible adjustments.

How Our Dyslexia Assessments Work

A clear and supportive assessment journey

At the Autism & ADHD Assessment Hub, our dyslexia assessments are designed to provide a clear understanding of how reading, spelling and written language are processed.

Dyslexia is a specific learning difference that can affect reading accuracy and fluency, spelling, written expression, memory and processing speed. Our assessment process is structured to explore these areas in a supportive and thorough way.

We assess individuals from age 8 through to adulthood, helping children, young people and adults gain clarity, confidence and the right support.

Step 1 – Pre-Assessment Questionnaires

Before the assessment, you will complete questionnaires covering areas such as:

  • Learning history and educational background
  • Reading, spelling and writing experiences
  • Memory, organisation and study/work habits
  • Everyday learning challenges

For children and young people, one of our assessors will arrange a 30-minute call with parents or guardians to discuss key themes. Where helpful, we may also contact the child’s school to gather additional insights.

This stage helps build a well-rounded understanding of strengths, challenges and learning experiences before the assessment session.

Step 2 – In-Person Assessment (2–3 Hours)

The assessment takes place in person at your nearest hub and is carried out by a Specialist Teacher in Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) with a Level 7 qualification and Assessment Practising Certificate (APC).

During the session, the assessor will use a combination of standardised tests and structured activities to explore areas such as:

  • Reading accuracy and comprehension
  • Spelling and written language skills
  • Phonological processing (how sounds in words are recognised and used)
  • Working memory and processing speed
  • Wider cognitive skills related to literacy and learning

Recognised assessment tools may include tests such as:

  • TOWRE-2
  • CTOPP-2
  • WIAT-III
  • WRAT-5
  • Other standardised literacy and processing assessments

These assessments help build a comprehensive picture of an individual’s learning profile and literacy processing skills.

Step 3 – Report and Feedback Session

Following your assessment, the assessor will analyse the results and prepare a comprehensive written report.

Your report will be provided within approximately six weeks and will include:

  • A summary of assessment findings
  • Identification of strengths and areas of difficulty
  • Whether the results are consistent with dyslexia
  • Practical recommendations for education, work or everyday life

Once you have received the report, you will attend a one-to-one feedback session (1–1.5 hours) via video call with the assessor.

During this session we will:

  • Explain the assessment results
  • Answer any questions
  • Discuss strategies and recommendations
  • Talk through next steps and support options
