Supporting Neurodivergent Women: Our Time with Neuro Divas

Apr 23, 2025

Last Thursday, we had the chance to visit Neuro Divas, a new support group in Birmingham for autistic and ADHD women. It is a welcoming space where people can talk, listen or simply be in a room with others who understand.

Every Thursday morning, women gather at The Sanctuary in Castle Vale to share experiences in a way that feels relaxed and genuine. There is no pressure to explain or perform, just space to connect.

On this visit, Dr Jess and Dr Zoe, our Clinical Directors at Autism & ADHD Assessment Hub, led a conversation about masking in autistic women. They explored how masking often begins early, why it becomes a familiar pattern, and what it can mean for wellbeing.

Masking can involve copying social behaviours, holding back natural responses, or adapting to meet expectations. Sometimes it is done without even realising. While it can be a way to feel safe in certain situations, it can also lead to stress, burnout and a sense of being disconnected from your own identity.

The discussion was open and thoughtful. Everyone who came brought their own insight. For some, the topic felt very familiar. For others, it was something they had not had words for until now. The honesty in the room spoke for itself.

We are grateful to Neuro Divas for inviting us in and for creating a space that puts the needs of neurodivergent women first. These kinds of groups make a real difference — not by offering solutions, but by making it easier to be heard. We will continue to support this work in any way we can.

If you are in Birmingham and looking for a space to talk, join in, or just have a cup of tea with others who understand, Neuro Divas meets every Thursday morning.
