Last week’s webinar on Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) was one of our most popular events yet, attracting attendees from across the country. Titled What is PDA? Understanding a PDA Profile in Autistic Individuals, the session provided a clear and thoughtful look at this complex and often misunderstood profile within the autism spectrum.
Led by experienced clinicians, the session was not only informative but also highly interactive. Attendees were encouraged to ask questions throughout, helping to shape the discussion and bring lived experiences and professional insights into focus. The result was a rich and inclusive conversation that reflected the diversity of views and experiences around PDA.
PDA is not currently a formal diagnosis in the DSM or ICD, but many families, professionals and autistic individuals recognise the distinctive features that often fall under this profile. These may include an intense need for autonomy, a heightened anxiety response to perceived demands and a preference for negotiation or play-based communication. It’s crucial to remember that these traits are not signs of defiance, but part of how someone experiences the world and protects their sense of safety and control.
The popularity of this webinar highlights the growing need for clearer information and open conversation about profiles like PDA. We are committed to offering spaces where people can learn, share and feel understood — all through a neuroaffirming lens. If you missed the session, keep an eye on our page for future events. In the meantime, we’ll continue sharing insight into topics that matter most to our community.
